I’ve been drawing silly pictures since schooldays. My first success was ‘six of the best’ for defacing a school science book. I drew sailors dancing on a submarine on a diagram explaining Archimedes principle…I might have got away with just detention, but adding a mermaid with tits made Mr Lewis unleash his cane.
‘Punch’ was THE satire magazine, it had been around since Victorian times and they only accepted work from the best cartoonists. In 1976 the magazine held an amateur cartoon competition. The subject matter was the forthcoming Olympics. I sent them a bunch of ideas and…I won!
Wooo!…There’s me with a centrefold showing six of my cartoons in Punch, and ten days at the Montreal Olympics.
On the strength of my new found fame I went along to see the editor of the Birmingham Sports Argus, the second City’s Saturday night ‘pink’. He took me on as the resident cartoonist with weekly topical and strip cartoons. This also got me work with the Birmingham Mail, the Argus’s motherpaper, and the largest regional newspaper in the U.K.
Over the years I’ve sold my cartoons to newspapers and magazines throughout the UK and Europe. I’ve also illustrated two books.
All this time I’ve been a Wolves fan. My first game was Wolves v Tottenham Hotspur in 1956/57. Those were Wolves’ glory days when Stan Cullis’s boys not only won three titles and two FA Cups but pioneered European football. There have been good times since then, but also some very bad times when Wolves nearly went out of business. However the good times are well and truly back under Nuno Espírito Santo and I’ve been more than happy to draw cartoons for numerous Wolves fan’s sites. From the reaction they seem to have become popular, there’s been the very occasional boo from the touchline from the odd fan who’s disagreed with my point of view…but that’s the life of a cartoonist!
I get requests to buy my work, but have always said that any Wolves fan is welcome to share or print off my Wolves’ cartoons for free. (I do take on any personalised commissions…give me a call).
Then I had this idea to produce a range of greetings cards that one Wolves fan could send another….or a lonely Baggies fan! The cartoon remains the same but the greeting inside can suit your need, be it Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday, Congratulations, Good Luck or Happy Anniversary, etc, etc.
